Matt Buyten (2004)

As a rookie in 2003, Matt Buyten put his name atop the list of riders who could contend for a freestyle win on any given night. He was rewarded with the 2003 Rookie of the Year award and used that momentum to carry him on to an X Games gold medal in the Step-Up contest.

In 2004, Matt continued his streak with several wins in the IFMA series—10, to be exact—but an injury sidelined him for the final part of the series, relegating him to 10th overall. Immediately following the 2004 X Games, Matt underwent a major shoulder surgery, keeping him on the sidelines for several months. He then came out for the 2005 X Games and missed a gold medal by a mere four inches in the Step-Up contest. He has since undergone yet another shoulder surgery but has plans to be back early in 2006. Buyten is one of the top riders in the sport, and if he is 100 percent healthy, you can expect to see him on top at each event he enters.
